NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) are collaborating on a multi-frequency synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite, NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR), which is expected to launch in January 2023. In preparation, NASA and ISRO are collecting and analyzing L and S-band SAR imagery with ISRO's Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) instrument. ASAR was mounted on NASA's Gulfstream III aircraft, and the antenna pod and navigation package from NASA UAVSAR radar system were utilized. As a continuation of Phase 1 in December 2019, Phase 2 and 3 of the ASAR campaign were flown in June and July 2021 to repeat data collects in Alaska and the Western U.S. and to capture new targets out of New Orleans and the East Coast. A number of Earth science research and application activities were of interest, including soil moisture, agriculture, glacier dynamics, hydrology, inundation, sea ice, and permafrost.
